Recognition for Training in Nuclear Medicine and Radiation Therapy
The Warith International Cancer Institute (WICI), affiliated with the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine in Karbala, has announced its official recognition by the International Energy Agency as a national and regional training center specializing in nuclear medicine and radiation therapy, making it the first of its kind in Iraq.
This project comes in response to the directives of the highest religious authority and its representative, Sheikh Abdul Mahdi Al-Karbalai, aimed at improving health conditions and enhancing the medical sector in Iraq. Warith Institute's recognition was achieved due to its advanced capabilities, including state-of-the-art medical equipment, modern infrastructure meeting the highest standards, and highly qualified and well-trained medical staff. These combined factors significantly contributed to this recognition and official acknowledgment.
Nuclear technologies play a crucial role in diagnosing and treating certain diseases, such as cancer and heart conditions. In this context, the International Energy Agency seeks to support countries in building their capacities to provide high-quality healthcare on a global level. For over 50 years, the agency has been using nuclear technologies in medicine and nutrition as one of the most common peaceful applications of atomic energy. Ensuring radiation quality in medicine contributes to delivering safe and precise treatment for cancer cases.
